About our Spring Festival:
The Spring Festival, also known as Chinese New Year, is China's most popular holiday. Here are some things you may not know about Chinese New Year.
1. There is no fixed date for the Spring Festival
According to the lunar calendar, the Spring Festival falls on the first day of the first lunar month every year and lasts until the 15th (full moon), which means that the Spring Festival is different every year. Speaking of the lunar calendar, it still exists in China and most Chinese people celebrate their birthdays through the lunar calendar as well.
2. Chinese people set off firecrackers during the Spring Festival
Setting off fireworks during the Spring Festival has a long history. Its origin is related to some myths in ancient China. Ancient people believed that firecrackers could drive away fierce Nian beasts, avoid accidents and disasters, and thus protect their families. This custom has been passed down to the present day, and the symbol of setting off fireworks extends to the ancestor's sacrifice and remembrance and conveys a festive and lively atmosphere.
3. Children will receive lucky money in red envelopes during the Spring Festival
When you are a child, you probably receive a lot of gifts at Christmas. But in China, people prefer the direct method - putting money in red envelopes. Interestingly, adults now also receive red envelopes. Thanks to smartphones and WeChat, billions of Chinese people share their happiness, send a digital red envelope in a group chat, and share the red envelope together. It's usually not about the money, it's about sending a message of blessing.
